Grandma Vivian's Ohio Respect Life Walk

Cleveland to Cincinnati, June 19, 2004

Following U.S. Route 42

Itinerary

Saturday, June 19 - Cleveland
8 a.m.: Respect Life Walk begins with Vivian and Tom Raddell at the corner of Detroit Avenue and West 25th Street following West 25th Street south, continuing on Pearl Road through Cleveland, Parma, Strongsville, and on to Brunswick. With great weather, Vivian walked 20 miles, distributing literature and stopping to talk with people along the way. Several people stopped or turned around to come by and wish her well. Thanks to the Raddell family for their hospitality and support.
Sunday, June 20 - Brunswick
After a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast at the Raddells, the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. near intersection of U.S. Route 42 and Ohio Route 303. Clear, breezy 60-degree weather continued and Vivian walked 17 miles through Medina and on to Lodi.
Monday, June 21 - Lodi
Walk begins at Lodi town square, 1 p.m. Great weather continued as Grandma Vivian walked 19 miles through West Salem to the outskirts of Ashland. We stayed with our friends the Weimers.
Tuesday, June 22
Rested and well fed at the Weimers, we resumed the walk at 9 a.m. on Route 42, just south of Ashland and continued through to Mansfield. Vivian is interviewed by Ashland Times reporter, and story titled "Baby Steps: Pro-life Grandma Passes Through Area in Walk to Cinci" along with photo, is published on June 23rd, providing information on the purpose of the walk. Vivian is joined at mid-day by the Gibbs family, Frieda Bishop, Mich Marciniak and Abbey Antolik.
Wednesday, June 23
We resumed the walk at 10:00 a.m. at the Mansfield city square with an interview by a reporter from Mansfield News Journal. Article ("Grandma Walking for Life") published June 14, describes the purpose of the walk and quotes Vivian, Cindy Weimer, and 12-year-old son, Codi ("I'm marching because it's wrong to kill babies.") The Weimer family accompanies Vivian through mid-afternoon and Vivian is joined later at Lexington by Dennis and Bonnie Oleska for another 6 or 7 miles to Johnsville. Vivian continues to just south of Williamsport, roughly 15 miles for the day. Thanks to Frank, Cindy and family for hospitality and support.
Thursday, June 24
We leave the Weimers with one of Cindy's great salads and snacks that sustain us through the day, beginning the walk at 11:30 a.m. two miles south of Williamsport; as on other days, people would stop and say they saw Vivian earlier or would pass by and return with bottles of cold water. A reporter from the The Morrow County Sentinel interviewed and photographed Vivian as she came through Mt. Gilead. Article will appear in the June 30th edition.
Friday, June 25
Walk began at 3 p.m. about a half mile north of Cardington city limits and continued to Ashley.
Saturday, June 26
Vivian walked from Ashley 17 miles through Delaware and about half way to Plain City.
Sunday, June 27
Beginning at the intersection of Route 42 and Ohio Route 287, approximately 11 miles north of Plain City, Vivian walked through central Ohio farmland through Plain City almost reaching the intersection of Route 42 and Interstate 70 -- well beyond the half-way point to Cincinnati.
Monday, June 28
Break for "Sing for Life" event in Dayton on June 29th and National Right to Life Convention in Washington D.C., July 1st - 3rd.
Tuesday, July 6
Resumed the walk at I-70 and U.S. Route 42, walking through London to a point about 7 miles east of South Charleston. While in London, Vivian was interviewed by a reporter from the Madison Press.
Wednesday, July 7
Walk begins 7 miles east of South Charleston. Vivian is joined by Judy Weckesser and Marian Marlin for part of the walk. After a break to take part in a pro-life educational outreach at a Kerry/Edwards rally in Dayton, the walk resumes and ends in South Charleston. Because of the high growth of weeds and narrow shoulders along Highway 42 in Greene and Clark counties, we shifted the walk to a parallel point on U.S. 40 which would take us into Springfield and then south on U.S 68 and into Xenia. It's a little longer but the roads are safer and we'll be going through more populated areas.
Thursday, July 8
Walk resumed on U.S. 40 east of Springfield city limit, proceding through town then south on U.S. 68 through Yellow Springs. In Yellow Springs, Vivian was interviewed by a reporter from the Dayton Daily News. Vivian completed the day by walking through Xenia. Total for the day: 20 miles.
Friday, July 9
Accompanied by George and Joan Riess and Bob Thoman, Vivian began walking at 9:30 a.m. at Carroll High School on Linden Avenue. She was joined along the way by Marti Folck (and children Alyssa and Ashton), Eula York, and Marti Kline for the walk into downtown Dayton. In the afternoon, Fran, Mary and Elizabeth Phillips walked with Vivian into Oakwood. Bob Thoman joined the walk in early evening through Centerville.

In the politically incorrect department, the reporter from the Dayton Daily News said that the story about Vivian was not printed because there was a lack of balance. Oh well ...

Saturday, July 10
We thoroughly enjoyed our role as witnesses to a life-affirming, solemn and joyful celebration of wedding vows in Mansfield, Ohio, between two exceptional people - Kerry Weimer and Ryan Hanawalt. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Hanawalt and their families.
Sunday, July 11
The walk began at Ohio Route 48 and Mandell Road on the northern edge of Centerville and proceeded south to Lebanon. With churches open, Vivian was able to give literature directly to pastors and church members. At Ridgeville we crossed paths with a bicycle rally which was covering 150 miles in two days to raise money for multiple sclerosis.
Monday, July 12 - Lebanon
The walk began at 10:30 a.m. at the old high school building on Oak Wood Street near the downtown Lebanon shopping area, then south to Route 42, on to Mason, ending at Sharonville.
Tuesday, July 13
Vivian walked from Sharonville on Route 42 (Reading Road) through Evendale, Reading, Avondale to the Planned Parenthood abortion mill at 2314 Auburn.
Wednesday, July 14
Joined by Cincinnati pro-lifers we picketed at Planned Parenthood from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Vivian arrived at Fountain Square at Noon where she was met by representatives from the Cincinnati Right to Life office. Accompanied by Pastor Jamie Franklin, Vivian completed the walk to the banks of the Ohio River.
